The term 'sore throat' is non-specific, describing any pain in the back of the mouth or throat. Not only are these soft oral tissues highly susceptible to inflammation and infection, they also serve as the passage for both the respiratory and digestive systems. As a result, a variety of inhaled and ingested agents can also cause inflammation of the throat, known as pharyngitis, which presents as a sore throat.
