Abstract

Antihistamines are among the most commonly prescribed medicines. Although the overall effectiveness of the different antihistamines in the treatment of allergic disorders such as allergic rhinitis is quite similar, these medicines are different in terms of their adverse effects, dosing and administration. For example, the older antihistamines, such as chlorpheniramine, diphenhydramine and promethazine, are associated with side-effects such as sedation, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation and urinary retention.
