Abstract

A key adverse effect of poorly controlled acute pain is progression to chronic pain. The subjective nature of pain complicates the issue of pain management, both as expressed by the patient, and as interpreted by the doctor. Since categorising pain helps guide treatment, the classification of pain is discussed in some detail. Assessing pain and treating it adequately are the goals of good pain management. Although similarities exist, the pharmacological management of acute pain differs from that of chronic pain. This short review discusses the basic approach to the management of chronic non-cancer pain, and the approach to the management of cancer pain.
