Abstract

Influenza is an acute viral infection of the respiratory tract caused by influenza viruses. Even though influenza can be acutely debilitating, it is a self-limiting illness in the general population. The number of influenza-related deaths varies considerably each year, and is influenced by the influenza virus and patients' age. Although the overall rate of illness is highest in children, rates of severe illness, including influenza-related complications and death, are usually highest in persons aged 65 years and older, children ≤ 2 years, women who are pregnant or postpartum (within two weeks of delivery), and in individuals of any age with an underlying medical condition.
