Abstract

Of the new mammal forms described in the following account, the two new subspecies of Viverra and one of the two Desmodillus subspecies were based on existing material in the collections of the Transvaal Museum. One other form, the new Macroscelides proboscideus subspecies, was based on two specimens received from the Plague Research Laboratory of the South African Institute for Medical Research. The remainder of the new forms described are from material collected on the various expeditions led by Mr Bernard Carp, of Cape Town, during the period 1949-51. Detailed reports on the mammals collected on these expeditions have been prepared, and it is hoped may be published in due course. The descriptions here given represent extracts from these reports, and are now being published separately in view of the time that must elapse before the complete reports can appear.
