Abstract

A new species of sand swimming skink from southern Somalia is described in the genus Lygosoma. The species is unique among skinks in lacking premaxillary teeth, and is unique or unusual among lygosomines in having undifferentiated subdigital lamellae, a vestigial eye sunken beneath an undifferentiated ocular scale, and a ventrolateral ridge. The species is perhaps most closely related to L. mabuiiformis and L. tanae. The discovery of this species adds to the already considerable diversity of the genus in the Horn of Africa.
