Abstract

Fossil remains of mammalian carnivores from recent excavations at the Sterkfontein hominid site are described. The sample includes material from the Member 2 deposits, for which a date of 3,0-3,4 million years based on palaeomagnetic data has recently been proposed. New records for the site are Felis caracal (caracal), Acinonyx jubatus (cheetah), Homotherium crenatidens (sabre-toothed cat), Pachycrocuta brevirostris (short-faced hyaena) and Hyaena brunnea (brown hyaena), and the presence of two species of the 'hunting hyaena' Chasmaporthetes is confirmed. An updated checklist of carnivore species present in the various deposits at the site is given.
