Historically, the larvae of Lithosiini have been assumed to be specialist feeders on algae or the algal component of lichens or, more rarely, liverworts and mosses (Kitching and Rawlins, 1999 and references therein). This unusual adaptation is reflected in adaptive larval characters, in particular the presence of a mandibular mola and associated head characters, which represent the most useful character suite for assigning taxa to this group.
