Following initial descriptions of individual genera and species, mostly from southern and eastern Africa, during the latter part of the 19th century (e.g.,Walker, 1854, 1862, 1865; Wallengren, 1860, 1863; Felder, 1874; Butler, 1878, 1888, 1895, 1896, 1898), the first contributions towards a more comprehensive treatment of the group were made by Hampson (1900a, 1903, 1909, 1914a) in the , as well as a series of other papers (e.g., Hampson, 1901, 1914b); in total Hampson described 15 genera of Afrotropical Lithosiini as new to science. By the 1920s some 350 genera of Lithosiini had been described worldwide (for a synopsis of the literature see Strand, 1922), but then as now intergeneric relationships remained poorly understood.
