Abstract

The construction of Fort Napier between 1843 and 1848 is discussed in the context of the role of the military in the making of an urban society. The circumstances preceding the British military occupation of Pietermaritzburg are sketched and considerable attention is given to the construction of the fort and the political and financial problems which arose. The importance of the garrison in the history of early Pietermaritzburg is analysed so as to determine its effect on class relations and the development of the urban environment.
