Abstract

Eight caves on the dolomitic Ghaap Plateau of the Northern Cape, South Africa, are discussed. Surveys are provided for seven caves and the biospeleology and climate of each is given. Kogelbeen (788 m) is the longest known cave in the Northern Cape. It has a diverse fauna composed of at least 39 species, living in five distinct life zones within the cave. Other caves discussed are the Eye of Kuruman cave resurgence, three Kono/Koning caves, Soetfontein, Wonderwerk and GatkoppieslBlinkklipkop caves. A plea is made for the responsible development of tourist caves. The Ghaap Plateau has further potential for speleological research.
