Abstract

During greenhouse studies on growth and development of seedlings of Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana Kunth) and Sabi Panicum (a cultivar of Panicum maximum Jacq.), measurements were required of root production, distribution and depth of penetration, height of top growth, length of longest leaf, and number of leaves. Drawing root distributions was laborious and liable to error, and exact lengths difficult to measure. Leaves had to be uncurled along the straight edge of a ruler to determine their length.
