Abstract

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is regarded as one of the most potent hepatotoxins and hepatocarcinogens. As early as 1965 it was recognized that AFB1 was capable of inducing deteriorative alterations in plant cells, and since then several reports involving the potential phytotoxic effects of AFB1 (and several other mycotoxins) have been published. The earlier literature involving several aspects of AFB1 phytotoxicity has been reviewed by Dashek and Llewellyn. Since then, several additional reports concerning the phytotoxic effects of aflatoxin B1 have been published. This article reviews the literature since 1983, and in the light of more recent findings, discusses the possible fate of AFB1 within the plant cell. Future research directions in the possible breeding of resistance to AFB1 are considered in terms of the findings regarding herbicide resistance.
