Abstract

This contribution will explore some prominent differences in the Targumic translations of Gen 4:1, particularly in the translation of Targum Pseudo-Jonathan, which asserts that Cain was not the son of Adam but the offspring of Samma'el. Linking this exegesis to the other only mentioning of Samma'el in Pseudo-Jonathan's translation of Gen 3:6, the article will consider this exegetical tradition within the context of the discussions on the origin of evil attested in apocalyptic writings (1 Enoch), in Jubilees and sapiential compositions (Ben Sira).
