It is well known that the biblical book of Jeremiah is preserved in two forms, a longer one in the Masoretic text and a shorter one in the Old Greek Bible. How are these two forms to be explained? In two recent studies this difference has been examined in a case study of one of the most famous passages, Jer 31:31-34. The first explains the longer text of the MT as a literary or theological development of the short text form (Schenker 2006), the second as a product of textual changes and translation technique of the Greek translator (Stipp 2009). In this present paper the two explanations are weighed and evaluated. It shows that the arguments in favor of a deliberate recension which modified the received text, namely the Vorlage of the Old Greek, transforming it into the MT, for motives of content and meaning, seem to outweigh the opposite arguments based on textual corruptions and translational initiatives on the part of the Old Greek.
