Abstract

While I was a reservist, I noticed that the emphasis in dealing with traumatic incidents was mostly put on one approach, namely counselling members after they'd been subjected to a traumatic incident. While a form of debriefing is obviously essential to either identifying whether or not mental anguish was present or indeed to going a step further and treating it, I feel that approaching the subject of trauma only after an incident has occurred has limited effectivity. We need approaches that prepare our police for trauma and the pitfalls of their own minds in advance.
