Abstract

Despite sterling police work in the Van Eyk murder case resulting in justice being served, many role-players often raise the question whether so-called farm murders and rural safety are priorities for the SAPS. At the end of January 2016, the Acting National Commissioner of the SAPS, Lt-Gen Phahlane said in an interview with RSG radio that rural safety will be prioritised. The SAPS's Rural Safety Strategy, which was implemented in 2011, will apparently be strengthened, resulting in increased police visibility in rural areas, among other things. With the Acting National Commissioner's comment as background, it seemed like the perfect time for Servamus to ask Brig July le Roux from the SAPS's Division Visible Policing what the Rural Safety Strategy (RSS) entails.
