Abstract

As a young magistrate in the nineties, I made myself available to be transferred from Johannesburg's city centre to one of the most remote areas of the Northern Cape. The contrast between the cosmopolitan area and my newfound microcosm stunned me and it took me a while to find my feet again. The sentencing of offenders became the most challenging part of my work, leading to some serious introspection and, eventually, to a career change.
