Abstract

Mutilated bodies, a living room floor covered in blood, images of a small child being raped ... These are some of the horrific crimes to which those working in the law enforcement environment are exposed on a daily basis. Witnessing the blood and gore so often must have an impact on them, and with this article, we want to determine the impact that this exposure has on police officials and investigating officers, and what they can do to cope. Although the focus of the article will be on investigating officers who are working with child sexual exploitation and pornography, the principles can apply to anyone working in law enforcement and who witness traumatic incidents each day.
