When the alarm bells sounded after lunch, fire-fighters running down the stairs could not help but glance at the mountain, which is virtually in the Roeland Street Fire Station's back yard. Their world was filled with thick, suffocating smoke. Everybody immediately knew that this was the mother of all the Cape fires. In fact, some fire-fighters described the flames rolling down the mountain as akin to molten lava, rolling and devouring everything ..
