Since then, the values of these companies have risen faster than a well-kneaded loaf of bread. In fact, the improved prospects for these firms have moved in lock-step with global coal prices. In seven months the spot price for a tonne of Central Appalachia coal in the USA increased from US$57,70 on the open market to $140 US, a jump of more than 140%. Prices of prompt South African coal cargoes FOB Richards Bay and coal delivered into Europe hit fresh highs during mid-June on strong demand and tight supply - a record $152,00 per tonne, up from November prices of around $143,00.
