Man can accomplish very little with his bare hands, but given tools to work with, he can be creative and very effective in whatever he does, be it hunting, building or agriculture. Man has always - for some millions of years - strived towards designing his tools so that he can use them more effectively and with minimum effort. Human factors engineering, as the science is known in Europe, is also known as ergonomics. The word ergonomics is derived from two Greek words, ergon (work) and nomos (laws).
