The reason is that nature is biting back at governments, municipalities and private developers that abuse it. Our project surveyed the upper catchment of the Sand River in Mpumalanga and found that many of the wetlands have been tilled for subsistence farming. In KwaZulu-Natal, coastal dune forest was replaced by cash crops and many riparian areas cut down for commercial agriculture allowing tropical cyclone Demoina to wreak enormous havoc in 1984.
