Abstract

As the world's population continues to grow at an alarming rate, so does our dependence on fresh water. Microorganisms exist on all surfaces that are exposed to air, including water, and a number of these microbes have the potential to cause disease. In order to destroy these harmful pathogens, water must be disinfected. An environmentally friendly, non-chemical method of treating contaminated water is the use of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection.
