Abstract

The leading proponents of biological nutrient removal (BNR) have indicated that instrumentation is critical to the operation and optimisation of nutrient removal systems. But where to begin? What provides the best value? What will the information mean? The following paper outlines four common nutrient removal processes, provides instrumentation recommendations at three different budget levels, and explains the purpose of each instrument. The minimum recommendation category has a budget of about US$5 000 (approximately R37 000), the medium transparency about US$50 000 (approximately R374 000), and the maximum performance varies with each system.
