TWA May / June 2006 - 31 The state-run National Ports Authority of South Africa (NPA) handled nearly 174 million tonnes of cargo last year with containers and vehicle imports accounting for the bulk of the cargo. According to Nisha Jones, spokesperson for the NPA, the volume of cargo in 2005 was marginally higher compared to 168 million tonnes handled by the country's seven ports in 2004. Container volumes, as one of the key contributors, grew by 13% due to increased imports fuelled by low interest rates and higher disposable incomes.
