Abstract

It is a great pleasure to be able to support the new journal. The South African Vocational Education and Training (SAVET) Programme, funded by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAid), is proud to have been involved from the outset in this groundbreaking and historical initiative in the Skills Development arena in South Africa. The new journal provides an important forum for practitioners and policy makers to engage with the politics and practice of Skills Development and is the first academic journal devoted exclusively to the topic of Vocational Education and Training (VET) in South Africa. It firmly removes vocational education and workplace learning from the shadow of schooling, which still permeates much of the discourse throughout the country and which is afforded a comparatively much higher status by many educationalists.
