This article commences with some observations on storytelling in relation to research and policy in vocational education and training (VET). It then moves to a selective overview of some Australian research examining literacy, communication and generic skills in the context of work and employment. The findings, derived from a critical examination of workplace settings, tend to suggest counter stories to the dominant meta-narrative of policy on skills, employment, productivity and prosperity. The article concludes with some observations on recent Australian research and practice highlighting 'skills ecosystems' and the importance of place in shaping enterprise culture and employee identity/ies.
