South Africa is a resource rich country with tremendous development potential. Its capacity to successfully host the World Cup attests to this. However, South Africa can do much better. The role of effective leadership, institutions and entrepreneurship are critical. Implementing a local development strategy, however, faces the constraints of good governance in the social, political and economic aspects of our lives. We find there is no 'one size fits all' development policy or strategy. Economic development is a complex interplay of the various stakeholders' views of local economic development. Mindful of the mistakes of other nations, we maintain it is in the market place of creative ideas that better ways forward for South Africa, and Africa, are to be found.
