Abstract

There have been some growing apprehensions about the level of effluent loading in Ikpoba River and the concomitant implications to humans health and safety of aquatic communities. This paper is on the analysis of samples of river water and canalized effluent streams carried out in order to ascertain if the fears are mere obsession. Physiochemical analysis of various samples of the river water and effluent were undertaken in a chemical laboratory. The research results show that the values of effluent parameters obtained are a far departure from National Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and international standards. For example, DO and pH values obtained are 1.57 and 10.4 as against 3.0 and 9.0 for NESREA, and 9.0 and 7.6 for USA respectively. Evidently, it is a confirmation that there is effluent overloading and that the fears are actually real. The situation therefore calls for attention so that the health of humans, animals and the aquatic community can be safeguarded.
