Abstract

Sports are the activities that students engage in, besides academics in schools to develop skills and develop their talents. These activities include ball games, track events and field events that students engage in to showcase their creativity and talents. This paper evaluates the extent of students' involvement in sports based on a study conducted in secondary schools in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya. The study was guided by functionalist theory advanced by Robert Merton whose theory is derived from Durkheim's idea of anomie that states that sports contribute to maintaining balance in society by requiring individuals to work together towards set goals and attain them. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The target population consisted of 10,907respondents from 47 secondary schools within Uasin Gishu County which included head teachers, teachers and students. Stratified sampling technique was used to select schools. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the principals and teachers. Simple random sampling was used to select students. Data was generated from the open, closed ended questionnaires and interview schedules. Data was presented using tables, frequencies, percentages mean and standard deviation. The study found out that students participate most in ball games and physical fitness while they participate moderately in athletics, field events and cross country. The least participation was in swimming and racquet games. It is recommended that schools should invest in acquiring sports equipments, and students need to balance academic and sport activities. This study is significant because it is resourceful to policy makers and the government of Kenya in the implementation of sports curriculum in secondary schools.
