Abstract

In this note the role of the map of Africa is considered, as is the function of a remark about Africa in Chekhov's . It is argued that the true meaning of the map and of the remark goes beyond the commonplace of representation. The map of Africa becomes an important element of the interior and reflects the main mood of the characters. The remark about Africa characterises the internal state of the hero. Thus Chekhov demonstrates new possibilities of creating meaning in a dramatic work.
