Abstract

Elsa Joubert contributed the first Afrikaans travel description of Mauritius to the canon. In addition to her sensorial descriptions of an accessible, tropical paradise and a source-based overview of the island's history at a time (1962) when the South African focus was rather on the interior, the Mauritian volet of the triptych is not only a description of a destination, but also of a point of departure. Joubert undertakes the journey to find possible solutions for South Africa's political and social challenges and chooses her sight-seeing accordingly. It is also an historical document which records her meeting with the Franco-Mauritian writer Marcelle Lagesse and several prominent Franco-Mauritians before independence in 1968.
