is one of the Overberg's most exquisite, and also most critically endangered, cormous plants. Endemic to fertile shalederived soils in Western Rûens Shale Renosterveld, a vegetation type with exceptionally high levels of geophyte diversity, it has always been confined to just a few sites in the vicinity of the Caledon Swartberg. Due mainly to intensive winter cereal crop cultivation, and to a lesser extent, urban expansion, populations of have become severely fragmented, resulting in much depleted gene pools. The only remaining population with any level of viability lies to the east of Caledon where it survives in remnant veld on state-owned land. It is protected by a perimeter fence and local volunteer conservationists have for many years attempted to keep encroaching alien vegetation under control.
