Abstract

At the end of September I had the opportunity to drive along some grain fields in the winter and summer rainfall regions of our country. It felt as though I was in two different worlds.In the winter rainfall region, the grain stood green on the fields and farmers anticipated good harvests. The Southern Cape in particular seemed like paradise and farmers were expecting an above-average harvest for the sixth year in a row.The summer rainfall region, on the other hand, was dry and dusty. For the last few years these areas have been in the grips of a severe drought which put immense pressure on the sustainability of the grain and livestock sectors.
