Abstract

As the average rainfall in Zimbabwe has continued to decline in recent years, government has been encouraging farmers in marginal regions to switch to growing small grains. Farmers across the country tend to favour maize cultivation, but frequent droughts regularly decimate the crop, leaving them facing hunger and financial ruin. Instead of maize, the government is promoting the cultivation of millet and sorghum in the drier regions, but farmers do not seem keen to make the transition.
