The genus Niepeltia Strand: taxonomy, and comments on structure and relationships (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae)
Abstract
The genus Niepeltia is redescribed and all the known species are reviewed. Structures of importance in the systematics of the genus are discussed, and the plesiomorphic/apomorphic states of the characters are evaluated. Twenty-three species are considered in this work; six names are recombined; of the 20 species found in southern Africa 16 are described as new. All the species, for which such information is available, are leaf-miners. The known distribution of the group is mapped, although it is stressed that this is unlikely to represent the true range of the genus.
