Abstract

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide and globally claims up to 17.9 million lives every year. It is responsible for a third of all deaths,(1) most of which are occurring in the developing world, including South Africa which is experiencing a rapid rise in CVD-related morbidity and mortality. For example, in 2019, more South Africans died of CVD than of all cancers combined.
